Personal Narrative

I care a lot about storytelling, leadership, and making a real difference in my community. Through journalism, student government, and club leadership, I've learned to communicate more effectively, work with others, and take initiative. I've always liked writing, but this year Bark has shown me how much student voice matters. This program has made me want to expand my interests and has made me curious about journalism (communication and social media) in college and beyond. As a reporter and web designer for the Redwood Bark, I've gotten real experience in a fast-paced environment where deadlines matter, and you have to pull your weight. It's taught me to write more clearly, edit more carefully, and be flexible; sometimes that means reporting, sometimes helping with the website, or organizing content. Being a web designer has taught me things I didn't expect. I've had to go beyond my own work, fixing things in SNO FLOW for others, coming in during SMART and lunch to help Cubbies with their layouts, and making sure everything was running smoothly. It taught me that being useful sometimes means pausing what you're doing to help someone else, and that's something I've come to genuinely value. Learning SNO FLOW elements has also made me a better writer; it gets me curious about how design and writing connect. I created and delivered a presentation for the class about enhancing our writing in this digital world. Before web design, I was a reporter, and the pace was a lot at first. But looking back, that's exactly what made me better. Learning to edit fast and keep up pushed me in ways I didn't expect.

What i've done

Outside of Bark, I've stayed involved in ways that reflect what I care about. Through student government, I've been in leadership for all four years, as well as serving as Junior Class Vice President, which taught me what it actually means to represent people, not just show up, but communicate, follow through, and listen to what others need. I also founded Bridge the Gap Club, which has probably been the most meaningful thing I've done in high school. I started it because I wanted to create something that supported equity in education and give students a real way to get involved. Building it from scratch, recruiting members, organizing tutoring, and fundraising over $1,000 has taught me how much work goes into making something real, and how worthwhile it is when it comes together. Beyond that, I've been involved in volunteering, athletics, and social media work, all of which have taught me discipline, adaptability, and the importance of showing up consistently.

what i've learned

Journalism has allowed me to bring my creativity to life through interviewing inspiring people and telling their stories. Researching and securing interviews pushed me out of my comfort zone. Reaching out to strangers isn't easy, but it taught me a lot. Through those conversations, I learned how important it is to ask thoughtful questions, really listen, and be willing to go off-script when things take an unexpected turn. One moment that stands out is connecting with Anne Woodward, the Talent Manager for Oscar-winning actress Mikey Madison. My preparation is what made that conversation feel personal and honest — a lot of what she shared wouldn't have come up if I'd just stuck to my scripted questions. That taught me that listening is just as important as asking. Looking back, this experience shaped who I am and showed me that I can share my voice and actually make a difference through what I create.

Summer Experience

Immersed in the Art of Journalism

This past summer, I attended a Kent State summer program focused on social media and marketing. Every day we heard from different guest speakers: influencers, content creators, professors, and industry professionals. I learned a lot about how to make content that actually resonates with people, how to find a niche, and how social media works on a deeper level than just posting. I participated in student presented weekly calls, and learned skills and strategies that connect directly to the Bark program, and how we can reach large audiences. We participated in workshops on investigative reporting and media ethics, which provided a profound new lens and has me excited about what we can do with this program!

The Writing Process

I also have dyslexia, so writing has never come naturally to me. Getting clean first-round edits was something I really struggled with at first. But the moment I started writing more and more, I started improving my articles. I have learned so much through the process, and it has made me a much stronger and more confident writer. That's part of why Bark means so much to me; everything I've done has taken extra work, and I'm really proud of that.

Looking Ahead: Senior Year

I want to continue in this program because I am not done learning, and I know I still have more to give. I want to keep developing my writing, strengthen my design and editing skills, and keep finding ways to tell stories that matter.
